Kooz is an established mechanical engineer, part-time content creator, and full-time car enthusiast. Upon purchasing his ND1 to replace his RX-7 FD as a daily driver, Kooz reached out to Miataspeed looking for a set of coilovers that would replace his previous Bilstein + Lowering Spring setup. Almost a year later, we’ve sat down with Kooz to get an honest review of his experience with the Öhlins DFV FPSpec Long Stroke.

Goals, ride quality, and driveability of the previous suspension setup.

“The goal for my ND1 Miata is to be able to go on occasional track days, as well as spirited drives on the weekends. It is currently my daily driver as well. I used to own a set of bilstein shocks with swift lowering springs. They felt great just for the streets and as a daily driver experience. Stiff around corners but soft enough to handle the bumps on the streets. The car felt lighter on its toes, more nimble and lighter on the corners. Steering felt more responsive and direct. I wanted to own a set of coilovers that would be able to retain the stiffness for the track and canyon driving, yet feel comfortable enough on the streets. Pretty much taking the bilstein shocks with the swift lowering springs on a whole new level, while having the options to change ride height and dampening.”

Satisfaction, ride quality, and driveability of the Öhlins DFV FPSpec Long Stroke.

“Setting up the preload was slightly difficult, as it involved certain calculations to achieve the correct amount of preload. As far as getting the ride height dialed in and installing the coilovers onto the car was pretty easy. Absolutely impressed with the quality of how the car felt on the first drive. The car felt more responsive on steering and taking corners, almost like it was even lighter on its feet. I felt like I was able to put more power down on the car as well. A little rougher on the streets but stiffer on corners. Perfectly fine on smooth roads. The car felt more responsive on steering and taking corners, almost like it was even lighter on its feet. I felt like I was able to put more power down on the car as well. I am absolutely satisfied with the product and wish I had purchased the kit earlier. I would recommend this product to anyone who is going to track their ND Miata and anyone who would take their ND Miata onto canyon roads.”
